Plus side - Looks fantastic and plenty of room inside
Negatives- We had problems with the door hinges and middle door mechanism (which was causing the doors to not stay closed and jam together when trying to close) which ended up in a replacement, as six hours of service calls couldn't do the trick. The second one installed, two weeks in, was leaking water inside and out. The drain line inside the fridge was plugged ( from manufacturer) resulting in yet another replacement as it cannot be fixed. Pretty disappointing considering this is an $11,000 fridge. Hesitant to go with this brand again, but we don't have a choice, as any other built in fridge in a 42" in black stainless is in the $20,000 range. Very disappointing to say the least.

Beware - Hinge and Door Seal Issues

We purchased this refrigerator plus additional KitchenAid appliances as part of our remodel in August 2015. Due to the investment in this refrigerator in particular we purchased an extended warranty through KitchenAid. In less than 3 years the door seal ripped around the upper doors. We opened a service call in December 2018 and finally in mid-April 2019 the service company that's contracted by AIG who is the underwriter of the policy gave up and said that the seal cannot be replaced. They tried to do replacement doors and claimed that those are not available either. In addition, we also had one of the door springs fail so that the right-hand door swings freely, similar to another reviewer. Due to this issue, when the right-hand door is opened the light does not come on. At this point the retailer isn't helpful nor is the extended warranty company and they're only offering 75% of the value paid to replace it, and we only have 45 days to make a decision. Needless to say this not acceptable.

We bought this with our new house and in less than a years time, the freezer stopped working. It shoots out water and there is ice all over the freezer. The ice cubes stopped forming as there is lump of wate coming out that gets frozen. The ice cube is so poorly designed that it is impossible to reach the ice shut off mechanism. The fact that other had the same problem, there is serious issue with regards to ice maker in this model.
The ice maker is super loud, every time water goes through the pipe to the ice maker, it is super loud.
It is hard to know how to replace the air filter and water filter. There are no vedios for this manual, and the generic vedios do not help for this model.
The refrigerator is too small and if you open both left and right doors, and while closing if the right one reaches first, the left one does not close. Also if you open just the right side, it does not stay open to allow you to get what you want with two hands. You have to prop it open which means, the entire load of the door is either on your elbow, your hand or your back. Very poorly designed making it very inconvenient. Priced too high for the value you get.

As of 9/18 this unit has been installed for 1 year in our home. Due to proximity of a wall and the oven the doors have to be adjusted to not hit either. So the doors will never stay open. Left door has the center seal plate and if you don't watch the door close it will prop open and not seal. the lower freezer drawer must also be forcibly closed as it will also remain open and ice and foodstart to defrost. The Black Stainless does chip. We also have a double oven, Dishwasher and compactor all Kitchen Aid.and they are wonderful as expected. Oh the compactor does not come in Black Stainless. so we had to go Black. This is not our first all Kitchen Aid kitchen. We went with Kitchen Aid because we loved our old appliance in the house we sold. Yes, they were over 20 years old and all Kitchen Aid and they performed magnificently. So naturally we were steadfast in purchasing Kitchen Aid for our new home. For the price we paid for these appliances we should have gone with another brand at least for the refrigerator. For something that cost nearly $10,000 It seems to be a constant battle of doors not closing or staying open, drawer not closing, Ice Maker overflowing and Shelf sagging. Do yourself a favor before purchasing this particular 42" built in. DO your research and make the best possible decision. This is not an a $1500.00 appliance available at any Box or home store. This is a significant investment of nearly $10,000 that you should be happy to own for years to come. At this point I feel we are stuck with a less than average appliance of extraordinary expense.

We moved into a new home with this refrigerator. Nice look and feel. I would like it if the right-hand drawer would open without the need to open both doors. Main problem is that the ice maker overflows and fills the space under the freezer door with ice cubes. We have to clean it out often.

Recently moved into a brand new house and we choose KitchenAid for all applicances. After using a smaller refrigerator with the freezer on top (which required bending down to see what was on the top refrigerator shelf), this KitchenAid Black Stainless refrigerator is a real pleasure to use. It not only looks good, but it has tons of space on shelves, in drawers and on the doors in the refrigerator area. We like the freezer on the bottom much better than on top or side-by-side. It's not the cheapest refrigerator out there, but the features and appearance make it totally worth it.

We purchased this fridge with our new construction last year. It is beautiful and looks great in the kitchen. Unfortunately, the hinges on the doors have both failed and while we were able to have the Left side door replaced quickly and easily - the right side door has taken us since February 2017 (and approx 15 service calls) to get it fixed/repaired. After the most recent replacement of the entire hinge and spring assembly on Oct 31, 2017, it has started to pop and show signs of failure again as of Nov 3, 2017. The repair company has been great throughout all this effort, despite the significant inconvenience to us. I'm really questioning our decision to have purchased KitchenAid :(
I am going to contact our Retailer tomorrow and ask for help, but I am hoping someone at KitchenAid takes note of this review also. We just want our fridge to work correctly, and relative to its cost. These things are not inexpensive!

We have had our refrigerator for almost 2 years. It was included in our newly built house. Based on the other reviews, we must have gotten a lemon because the icemaker is not efficient. It keeps making ice and overflows. We have ice cubes all over the bottom of the freezer. You have to remove the ice tray to turn the ice maker off and if it's too full you the ice cubes spill all over. We've had it serviced twice and still can't resolve the issue. The french doors slam if they are let go and not shut gently, and now the seal has been torn on one of the doors. I've never had so many issues with a refrigerator.

This is a very expensive refrigerator and the ice maker does not work. The appliance repair people were out here SEVEN times to try to fix the problem and have not been able to do so. Whirlpool has not honored their warranty yet and the repair men keep coming out to try to fix this to no avail

The french door refrigerator looks and works great. Good lighting and adjustable shelves and good use of space. The spring in the left door, which has the double seal, occasionally twangs like it got caught in the wrong position, but otherwise we love it.

Bought a house 2 years ago with a built in kitchen aide refrigerator that died. It was 20 years old. Had a little problem finding replacement as had to be special ordered. However after getting it installed I am very pleased. It is very nice to look at and is spacious. I only hope this one will last 20 years. Love it.

Bought this a month and a half ago. It's very quiet compared to my last fridge (when ice is being made or consender is running you can hear it, but usually those are not happening). Ice maker works well and it holds a lot. Still getting used to counter-depth (cannot fit a pizza box in there) but that doesn't have anything to do with the fridge, just the style and depth of all built-ins.

First of all Lowe's did a great job installing this gigantic fridge without scratching it or our floors. The fridge is beautiful to look at inside and out. Very thoughtful touches such as a bin to store eggs and functional ice tray. Very quiet. I don't think I've ever heard it make a sound. The only drawback we have experienced within the first month is the flap on the left door that seals the French doors was somehow broken and doesn't close easily anymore. Apparently we are going to have to be very careful opening and closing the doors.

We replaced an old KitchenAid 42" side-by-side model that was 22 years old with this new beauty in October 2016. The old one had wooden panels that matched our cabinets, so this new black one stands out a lot - but that's okay because it is quite handsome. The old one seemed to hold more because the interior shelves were definitely deeper. If I designed this, I'd consider omitting shelves on one door, then the interior shelves and drawer could be deeper. I'd also add an exterior water dispenser (which takes up room inside, I know. But still.) This new one is much quieter - that's for sure - and that's a good thing. All in all, we're pleased this this guy.

Overall the refrigerator is too small , freezer is small too. When i open the right door , the door does not stay open , i have to hold with my hands , so inconvenient while trying to grab things inside the refrigerator . Very expensive.

Our former Kitchen Aid refrigerator died after 17 years of use. We needed a built in with the exact dimensions of our old unit so it would fit in the specific cabinet space. This one made it with 1/8 inch to spare. Our old unit had wood panels and this one is Black stainless steel. The unit is very impressive in Black stainless and has given our kitchen an updated look. The inside is a grey metal look and we would have preferred it to be white like all other refrigerators but I guess it just takes getting use to it. Overall it met our specific needs and we really like the Black stainless steel and will eventually replace our other appliances with the Black stainless steel.

I purchased this fridge and the frame cracked and was deemed irreparable so KA replaced it. The replacement broke 5 months later due to a completely different reason from the 1st one. The recommendation was to have it replaced but KA refused. I emailed teh CEO twice and he never responded. I was asked to contact customer service and I did but they never got back to me. I finally had it fixed because KA gave me no other choice and the fix has lasted 2 weeks before the same issue occurred again. Now I am back to a broken fridge. I don'r understand how KA won't at least respond back to me and stand behind it's product.

I bought this about 2 months ago and had to wait for it to be delivered - about a month ago. I've been using it and loving it - although my renos are still ongoing so I haven't seen it installed with the cabinetry yet. Good visibility of all shelves. I wish the interior lights would come on as soon as you open a door (not wait till they hit a certain 'angle' of being open. The covered interior (butter?) container at the top of the door sometimes gets caught when opening the door and opens allowing stuff to fall out. 5 Months old and has completely broken down. Needs a new motherboard and more. Repair technician equated the issue to an engine going out on a brand new car and recommended that it be replaced instead of fixed. Customer service said they won't replace. Sent an email to the CEO and didn't get a response. You spend this much on a refrigerator and you expect it to last 20 years.

purchased refrigerator about 1 month ago. delivered and installed same day. Except for no prior advicei from salesman or otherwise that when doors close there is a "pop out" [from inside air pressure], all is (was) most satisfactory.

So far,I am mostly delighted with my purchase. It's a terrific looking refrigerator which performs well. (Even the ice cubes are good looking.) The black doors are really splendid - a major design innovation. I have just three suggestions. The drawers in the refrigerator portion need drawer pulls or recessed spaces to make them easy to grip. There is no obvious way to pull them out. The butter containers do not open easily. A little tab on the bottom of the lid would do the job. It would also be nice to be able to open one door (not both) to get at the drawers. These are small matters. 5 stars for me.

We bought this refrigerator about a month ago and absolutely love it. Keeps food right in fromt. Nothing hiding all the way in the back. LED lights, interior color, charcoal air freshener, veggie keeper all standard. Plenty if ice too.

We replaced our kitchen aid built-in when the older model quit working. This one is far superior to be old. Our old one never really seemed to work right. We love the platinum interior and LED lights. Everything stays really cold. The ice maker is very good as well.

I love the amount of space available in this refrigerator! Everything has easy access. I was unsure of the ice being inside the freezer, but after dealing with numerous faulty water/ice dispensers, this is a pleasure.

Great looks, some design mistakes

I have had this for about a month. The color inside is quite nice. Looks good. I like that the ice maker is inside the fridge. I think an indoor water dispenser would be nice. The drawers do not open if you don't have both doors open (it might scratch the seal between doors) which makes it a bit uncomfortable for using. The other thing is that it has a lot of humidity. I think there might be something not working properly. The veggie drawers don't have a humidity control, instead it has an extra thing you out there. I think if it where built inside like others it would be much better. I would have liked to see a deeper freezer and a compartment for items like ice cream. It seems a bit simple for such an expensive fridge.

We have had this 42" builtin for 3 weeks now and it is quite, well designed, professional looking. Did a lot of comparisons and this unit won based on features where they count, lighting, price, reputation. Decided to not invest in door dispenser and other bells/whistles to keep it simple, reliable, and durable.
